SICM - Student Institute of Campus Ministry

SICM!

I began writing about SICM (Student Institue of Campus Ministry) in my last blog. If you haven't read that, you can check that out here!

Every day began with worship that the CCF staff thoughtfully prepared and lead. It was a great way to start the day and prepare our hearts and minds for that day's teaching.

The campus ministry at CCF has been around for over 40 years, so the knowledge and wisdom from their pastors is so invaluable! Our students spent a majority of their time in classes learning how to be missionaries on their campuses.

We were able to attend CCF's Friday Night Fellowship twice while in Washington. Our models of ministry are very similar, so in some ways, it felt like being home. It was cool to see how God was using their ministry!

Our host family! Cindy and Bob housed and fed us for the entire week. The generosity of the many host families, like Bob and Cindy, make it financially feasible for so many students to attend!

The week ended with a closing ceremony and commissioning of the students as missionaries on their campus. We took turns praying for each campus and the students who will be there!

After the ceremony, two students shared their stories and were baptized. It was a cool way to end the week! They were both so purposeful to honor our community and what God has done in their life through their baptisms.

I've talked to and heard so many stories of how God has used SICM to impact the students who attended. I asked Cameron, a student at Collin College, if I could share what he wrote about SICM:

"My heart could burst it’s so full. From the moments where simple places became sacred, to the times where God so evidently moved, to the endless joyous laughter, the deep meaningful talks, and every last moment in between. SICM 2018 was one for the books and all of its members are headed out to change their schools and the world that lies ahead of them. I’m not really sure where to start with the thank yous since there was so many people who made this whole thing possible but I’ll give it a try. Thanks to those who supported us from prayerfully to financially, thank you to the FOCUS staff, the SICM staff, and CCF staff. A very special thank you to all of the host families (especially mine 😉 I couldn’t say enough good things about them) Thanks to all those who came and poured into each other. And thank you to those who we might have seen but wouldn’t have been able to have the same experience without. One of my biggest take aways from this week is ‘Jesus at the center.’ So much good comes from this one choice. One of the highlights of this week had to be BTT (bed time talk) it showed me how wonderful our community is and helped build great personal relationships with my roomies. There is so much that I could continue gushing about, but I won’t make you sit through it all, I’ll just leave it simply as a 10/10 time."

"I was very hopeful for what God was going to do during my first semester in college. I did, however, have a lot of anxiety about my professors, whether or not I would build Godly friendships, and how I would find a good Christian community. In the past, I’ve struggled with making friends--I think because I feared rejection. My fears made it hard for me to actually open up and connect with others, either in a spiritual or non-spiritual way. When the Club Fair came around at Richland, I went up to the FOCUS booth and talked to Sandra, one of the campus ministers at Richland. I found what I was looking for! I have built spiritual relationships that have become a second family to me. I have made unexpected friendships through serving on the worship team at UTD and doing a one-on-one Bible study. That’s the beauty of FOCUS--they love on you and challenge you to be more like Jesus. This year, the theme was ‘'Send Me'. This has become a theme for my life because I feel the need to share the love of Christ. Thankfully, I was able to attend SICM (Student Institute of Campus Ministry) where I was trained to do just that! Top-notch teachers taught us all sorts of things about what it looks like to be a missionary to our campuses. I want to thank FOCUS for believing in me and equipping me to be a “sent-one!"
